Intergenerational workforce: Tackling bias in healthcare teams

Date:  18 September 2025
Host:  IHF
Topic: Leadership SIG

Hospital teams today can span five generations, bringing valuable diversity of perspectives. However, diversity of any kind can also introduce communication challenges and frustration, with unconscious bias influencing team morale and collaboration, with knock-on effects on workforce management. Age-based diversity is no exception.

In this webinar, brought to you by the IHF Women in Leadership SIG, a panel of experts will explore the dynamics of intergenerational teams. Participants will leave with an understanding of age-based bias, learn and share strategies which foster awareness, advance age-inclusive frameworks, and improve communication between ages and stages of life.

The webinar will be chaired by Dr Mantwa Chisale Mabotja – Medical Manager and Public Health and Preventative Medicine Specialist at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital in South Africa and will feature the following speakers:

  • Megan W. Gerhardt, Ph.D. is a workplace generational expert and Professor of Management and Leadership at the Farmer School of Business at Miami University. She is the founder of Gentelligence, a workplace movement to leverage age and generational diversity as a source of opportunity. Megan has published widely on generational differences in the workplace and is author of the book Gentelligence: A Revolutionary Approach to Leading an Intergenerational Workforce.
  • Erin Maruzzella, MBA Founder and Director of Age-Friendly Design Thinking, is a subject matter expert on the business of longevity and an Age-Friendly design consultant for the products, systems, and spaces that preserve our agency as we grow up and grow older together in community.
  • Dr Miguel Paiva, is the CEO of Unidade Local de Saúde de Entre Douro e Vouga, Portugal. He is responsible for the management of both the hospital and primary care units of the region.
