Urban Care, Tanzania

Africa and Eastern Mediterranean

IHF member since: 2024

Urban Care was founded in March 2019, as a small healthcare clinic with the vision to make quality healthcare accessible to everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Located in Fumba Town, a town development in Zanzibar based on permaculture principles, Urban Care serves expatriates, local citizens and visitors alike. Urban Care has quickly established itself as a hallmark in the private healthcare sector in Zanzibar, Tanzania, setting standards in the use of telemedical and digital solutions in patient-care and service delivery.

The hospital expanded over the years and managed to deepen its good connection and collaboration with Zanzibar's Ministry of Health, signing an MoU to enter into a public-private partnership in 2022. Based on this partnership and in coordination with Urban Care's unique financial model, the antenatal and postnatal care, baby well checks, ultrasonography services, sick visits and basic medications are offered free of charge to community members with little financial means. In addition to this, Urban Care is running regular community health awareness sessions throughout the year in collaboration with community health volunteers and community leaders.
