Highlights of IHF sessions at Africa Health 2024
Thanks to IHF members and partners for delivering two well-received panel sessions at Africa Health (22 to 24 October 2024). Focusing on hospital administration and management, and environmental, social, and governance standards in healthcare, both panels enjoyed engaging discussion with the audience.
Both sessions were expertly chaired by Dr Salim Hasham, IHF Special Advisor for the Africa region, who shared a summary of the event here.
The keynote presentations by Jean Courtney, Joint Commission International, Petrus Swanepoel, MediClinic, Irfan Khan, Evercare Group, and Dr Shrikant Maurice Peters, Groote Schuur Hospital Trust, focused on global environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards and relevance in Africa; the hospital of the future; ESG and the built environment, and medical management for clinicians.
Engaged and lively panel presentations were made by Toseef Din, CEO at M.P. Shah Hospital, Kevin Zacharyasz, Director of Healthcare Sustainability at Joint Commission International, Imran Osman, CEO at Avenue Healthcare, Irfan Khan, CEO at Evercare Group, and Dr Jayshina Punwasi, COO of Groote Schuur Hospital Trust.
The hospital management session focused on enhancing operational excellence through system redesign; careful adoption of digital transformation; how to overcome the challenges of low-resource settings; and maintaining a healthy workforce during change.
During the ESG session, the panellists vigorously engaged over the topics of challenges and solutions for sustainable healthcare in low-resource settings; globalization and localization – how to drive wider Africa and Asia experience from a private for-profit healthcare perspective on ESG; as well as smart integration of ESG principles in the healthcare delivery ecosystem; dealing with the financial conundrum head on; standards and data to meaningfully drive the ESG agenda In Africa; and the leadership and governance domain in practice.
