King Faisal Hospital Rwanda and IHF begin five-year sustainability partnership

Date:  26 August 2026

The IHF and King Faisal Hospital Rwanda (KFHR) have begun a new five-year partnership to strengthen sustainable and resilient healthcare in Rwanda.

As part of this journey, Will Clark and Maja van Bruggen from the Geneva Sustainability Centre recently spent three days at KFHR in Kigali. The visit brought together leadership engagement, practical training, hospital observation and facilitated discovery workshops, including delivery of the Executive Masterclass in Sustainable Healthcare.

Building on a strong foundation

KFHR has a clear and ambitious vision for healthcare sustainability and resilience. The hospital has already established a strong foundation, with a range of clinical and non-clinical initiatives in place. These include electronic patient records, solar power installations, the use of reusable materials, medicines management processes that help minimize waste, and measures to improve the efficient use of resources.

The partnership provides an opportunity to build on this foundation and bring existing initiatives together within an overarching sustainability transformation pathway. It will also help identify new opportunities to strengthen the hospital’s resilience and sustainability over time.

Strengthening leadership capacity

During the visit, senior leaders from across hospital operations and healthcare delivery came together to explore these opportunities and consider how sustainability can be integrated into the hospital’s wider strategic priorities.

The visit marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration between the IHF and KFHR. Through continued engagement, training and shared learning, we will work together to strengthen leadership capacity, support practical action and develop a sustainability approach that reflects the hospital’s priorities, context and vision.

We are excited to begin this journey with King Faisal Hospital Rwanda and look forward to sharing the progress, learning and insights along the way. – Will Clark, Sustainability Director at the Geneva Sustainability Centre
