Dr. McMaster is a member of the Board of Directors for HealthCareCAN, a member of the Health Research Council of BC, a member of the Board of Directors of Transplant Research Foundation of BC, a member of the Board of Medical Device Development Centre, and served Chair of the Board for Research Canada 2018-2021. In July 2020 Dr. McMaster was appointed as Vice Dean, Research for the Faculty of Medicine, UBC, and was instrumental in the development of the BC COVID-19 Clinical Research Coordination Initiative (CCRI) and serves as the Co-Chair of the Clinical Operations and Research Task Force.
He is actively involved with national and international granting agencies including the World Health Organization, Medical Research Council, Canadian Institutes of Health Research where he served for many years on the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Committee and as a member on the National Advisory Committee for Strategies on Patient Oriented Research. With the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, he served as Chair of the Research Advisory Council.
Dr. McMaster received a Bachelor and Master of Science in Microbiology & Immunology from the University of British Columbia (UBC) that was followed by a D.Phil. in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford. His research interests are in the areas of molecular immunology, parasitology and transplant immunology.
Dr. McMaster is a Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics and was Head of the Department from 2000-2010. Dr. McMaster also held the positions as Director of the Immunity and Infection Research Centre at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI) and Director of Transplant Immunology for British Columbia Transplant. He was the Vice President Research Vancouver Coastal Health, Executive Director, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, and Associate Dean of Research, Faculty of Medicine, UBC 20102020. Dr. McMaster held the position of Chair of the Board for BC Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (BCCRIN) 2013-2016 and is currently Past-Chair of the AHSN Clinical Trials BC Advisory Counsel. He was an inaugural member of the CIHR SPOR National Steering Committee (2014-2019), the Canadian Clinical Trials Coordinating Centre Advisory Committee (2012-2018) and recently appointed to the CIHR Academic-CIHR Strategic Partnership Table.
Dr McMaster became a member of the IHF Governing Council in September 2024.
