Dr Ton Krol

Ton Krol, who was born in 1946, graduated from the University of Groningen in the behavioural sciences, specialising in clinical studies, before taking a post-doctoral programme in economics and organisational studies at the University of Amsterdam. He also took the Management for Hospital Directors study programme.

From 1971, he worked in various managerial positions in healthcare institutions. In 1985, he became the chairman of the Dutch Association of Healthcare Providers for People with Disabilities and the vice-chairman of the Nationale Ziekenhuis Raad (‘national hospital board’), before becoming its chairman in 1991. The Nationale Ziekenhuis Raad, which later became the Nederlandse Zorg Federatie (‘Dutch healthcare federation’), was the umbrella organisation that represented the interests of every hospital, psychiatric hospital, nursing home, and disability healthcare organisation in the Netherlands. As an employers’ organisation, it was responsible for the conditions of employment of around 500,000 people in the more than 1,000 institutions. Its tasks also included representing the interests of the sector and influencing legislation in the Netherlands. The position of chairman, which Ton Krol held until 1999, entailed many national and international representative responsibilities. From 1992 until 1999, for example, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), and between 1996 and 1999 a member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER). His international positions included that of member of the Executive Committee of the Standing Committee for Hospitals in Europe.

From 1991 until 1993, he was a member of the Governing Council of the International Hospital Federation, based in London. He was subsequently re-elected in 1995, before being elected to the Executive Committee in 1997. In the period up to 2003, he was the President-Designate (1997-1999), President (1999-2001), and Immediate Past President (2001-2003). During his presidency, the organisation relocated from London to the region of Geneva.

In 2001, he became an honorary member of the South American Hospital Federation, and an honorary member of the International Hospital Federation in 2003.

Since 1999, he has held a large number of supervisory board positions in a variety of major companies and hospitals, housing companies, pension funds, and others. Today, he is still the president of the supervisory boards of five large companies, which are involved in the construction, insurance, and investment sectors, among others.

Ton Krol has been married to Thea since 1969; they have two children and six grandchildren.

In 1996, he was awarded the honour of Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
