Since 1 September 2024, Robert Mardini has been serving as CEO of the Geneva University Hospital (HUG), Switzerland’s largest university hospital. A leading institution in healthcare, research, and education, HUG employs more than 13,000 staff and operates with an annual budget of CHF 2.5 billion. In this role, Robert Mardini steers the institution’s strategic direction, working closely with the Board of Directors, political authorities, and key partners within the healthcare system.
Prior to this appointment, he led the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from 2020 to 2024, overseeing humanitarian operations in more than 100 countries and managing a workforce of 20,000.
A graduate in civil and hydraulic engineering from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), he joined the ICRC in 1997 as an engineer and held several senior leadership positions, including Deputy Director General, Regional Director for the Near and Middle East, and Head of Delegation to the United Nations.
He has received several distinctions, including the EPFL Alumni Award in 2020, and was elected to the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) in 2021. He is also a member of the Geneva Diplomatic Club, the EPFL Strategic Advisory Board, and serves as Executive in Residence at IMD.
Mr Mardini joined the IHF Governing Council in September 2024.
